Pomegranate ~ Superfood for the Holidays

Pomegranate, originally from Persia, with its use dating back to 4000 B.C., is a delicious sweet and sour fruit with lustrous red edible jewel-like seeds. Though recently recognized in the West for its rich anti-oxidant content, pomegranate seeds provide much more health benefits than just their high vitamin C content. Incidentally, pomegranate seeds have more antioxidant activity with high amounts of flavonoids than green tea or red wine. No wonder pomegranate is one of the greatest superfoods of all times.

Historically, the pomegranate rind was used for fighting off dysentery and intestinal parasites. Its seeds provided benefit for heart disease. Today, research shows its powerful effect in reducing heart disease through lowering blood pressure and reducing plaque buildup and cholesterol.

Modern researchers demonstrate its anti-cancer action by its ability to destroy cancer cells and prevent cancer cell growth in prostate, breast, lung and colon cancers.

Pomegranate is a phytoestrogens which means it binds to estrogen receptors throughout the body, thereby, harmonizing the effects of estrogen, resulting in reduced hormone-related cancer risks and inflammation.

Recent studies provide initial evidence for its potential in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Pomegranate seeds help control blood sugar, prevent oxidative damage to cells, and may optimize the body’s natural metal chelation pathways.

As a powerful anti-inflammatory fruit, daily intake of pomegranate assists in reducing arthritis and joint pain.

Pomegranate eaten and used topically can beautify skin, reduce the aging process, and treat and prevent hair loss.  It acts as an aphrodisiac increasing libido and making it a fantastic anti-aging fruit.

Its seeds boost immunity during the cold and flu season, so eat it daily to fight off and prevent infections.

During the holidays, use pomegranate seeds in your  stuffing, or mix some in with your cranberry sauce. Sprinkle some on salads, fill your pies with it, use it as garnish, or simply juice it not only for its superpower health benefits but to bring some gorgeous red jewel color to your table.

Enjoy and keep healthy during the Holidays!
