Technology

What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is prepared from your own blood and contains concentrated platelets, growth factors, and other bioactive proteins involved in the body’s natural repair processes.

Growth factors act as signals between cells, helping coordinate tissue repair, collagen production, and the formation of new blood vessels. PRP concentrates the platelets that release these signals and delivers them directly to the area being addressed. Depending on the application, PRP is injected into targeted tissue or used with microneedling.

Because PRP comes from your own blood, it is known as an autologous therapy. Its use spans medical and aesthetic applications, making it a versatile part of regenerative medicine. At Holistique, PRP may be used on its own or combined with other therapies according to the application and your individual needs.

    Procedure

    How PRP Therapy Works

PRP begins with a small sample of your own blood. The sample is processed to concentrate platelets and their growth factors, then applied according to the procedure and the area receiving care.

Five stages of PRP preparation: a blood draw, the sample spun in a centrifuge, the platelet-rich layer separated from platelet-poor plasma and red blood cells, the PRP delivered into the skin, and the tissue renewing.
    1. Blood Draw

A small amount of blood is drawn, usually from your arm. This sample provides the platelets and plasma used to prepare your PRP.

    2. Spin

The blood sample is processed in a centrifuge. Spinning separates the blood into components so the platelet-rich portion can be collected.

    3. Concentrate

The platelet-rich portion is collected to prepare PRP. It contains concentrated platelets, growth factors, and other bioactive proteins involved in the body’s repair processes.

    4. Deliver

The prepared PRP is applied to the intended area using the technique appropriate to the procedure. Joint and scalp applications use targeted injections. Holistique’s Golden Gate Lift combines microneedling with targeted PRP injections.

    5. Renew

PRP brings concentrated platelets and their growth factors to the area where tissue repair support is intended. The response to PRP and the time needed to see changes vary by person and application.

    Why Holistique

    Why Choose Holistique for PRP

    • Pioneering PRP in the Pacific Northwest

Dr. Nooshin K. Darvish, founder and Chief Medical Officer of Holistique, began performing PRP injection therapies in 2008, first for joints and later cosmetic applications, years before regenerative medicine reached the mainstream. Performing PRP since 2008, she developed Holistique's PRP protocols and personally trains every provider who delivers them, so each treatment reflects her standard of care.

    • Personalized PRP Care

Every PRP plan at Holistique is personalized. When the evaluation points to underlying contributors, your provider may add nutrition and oxygenation support, and for hair and scalp care, oral and IV nutrients, hormone balancing, and gut microbiome therapy to treat the root cause alongside PRP. Within specific procedures, PRP may also be combined with ozone, peptides, or stem cell therapies; the Golden Gate Lift, built on Dr. Darvish's KHOSH Method, pairs these with microneedling and targeted PRP injections.

    • Ultrasound-Guided PRP Placement

Holistique offers ultrasound-guided injections for musculoskeletal applications. Ultrasound helps visualize the area and guide placement, improving the accuracy of injections into the intended joint or soft tissue.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Common Questions About PRP Therapy

    • How many PRP injections will I need?

The number of treatments depends on the area and condition being addressed and your individual response. For musculoskeletal concerns, a series of two to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart is common. Aesthetic and hair restoration protocols may involve a similar series with maintenance sessions as needed. Your provider will create a personalized treatment plan based on your evaluation.

    • Is PRP painful?

Most patients describe PRP as well-tolerated. You may feel mild pressure or discomfort at the injection site, depending on the treatment area. For musculoskeletal injections, a local numbing agent is typically used. For aesthetic applications, like microneedling or deeper injections, a topical numbing cream is applied beforehand. Any post-procedure soreness is generally mild and resolves within a few days.

    • How do I know if I am a candidate for PRP?

PRP may be appropriate if you are experiencing joint pain, sports injuries or tendon, muscle or ligamental inflammation or injury, hair thinning, skin quality concerns, or sexual dysfunction. As long as you have good quality and amount of platelets, don’t have blood disorders or cancer, most people can be eligible. A consultation with one of our providers is the best way to determine whether PRP is right for your condition, goals, and overall health profile.

    • Is there downtime after PRP?

Downtime is minimal for most PRP treatments. Musculoskeletal patients may experience mild soreness for one to three days. Aesthetic patients may have temporary redness or swelling and should avoid direct sun exposure for 2-3 days. Most patients return to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours after any PRP therapy. Your provider will give specific post-treatment guidance based on the procedure performed.

    • How should I prepare for PRP injections?

Hydrate well before your appointment and eat a balanced meal. You will be asked to discontinue certain medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), steroids, or blood thinners for a short period before treatment, as these can interfere with platelet function. Your care team will provide specific preparation instructions.

    • What should I do after the procedure?

Avoid anti-inflammatory medications (such as ibuprofen, NSAIDs) for at least a week after PRP, as they can inhibit the healing response PRP is designed to stimulate. Stay hydrated, eat well, and follow any specific post-procedure instructions from your provider. Ice may be used briefly for comfort but should be limited, as inflammation is part of the healing process PRP supports.

    • Can I exercise after a PRP injection?

We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for 48 to 72 hours after a musculoskeletal PRP injection. Light movement and walking are generally fine and important to continue. Your provider will give guidance specific to your treatment.

    • How long do results last?

Results vary depending on the condition being treated and the individual patient. For musculoskeletal concerns, the effects of continued collagen production can last for months, and symptom benefits may last over a year for many patients, depending on multiple factors, especially after a series of injections. Aesthetic results may improve over weeks as collagen production increases and may be maintained with periodic sessions.

    • Is PRP safe?

PRP uses your own blood, so the risk of allergic reaction or rejection is extremely low. Side effects are typically limited to mild soreness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site, which generally resolves within a few days. PRP is administered by trained providers under clinical supervision at Holistique, and joint injections are mostly performed under ultrasound guidance.

    • Does insurance cover PRP therapy?

PRP therapy is a self-pay service. Payment is expected at time of service.
